You need the following:
-
A French press
-
A spoon
-
A timer
The French Press
This is an "immersion" method. The coffee sits in the water for the whole duration, ensuring every bit of flavour is soaked out. Because the filter is a metal mesh rather than paper, the natural oils pass through, giving you a "heavier" feel on the tongue.
The Ideal Bean:
The Ideal Grind:
Aim for a texture like coarse sea salt. If it’s too fine (like sand), it will be hard to press down and might taste muddy.
Step-By-Step Instructions:
-
Warm up: Pour some hot water into your empty pot, swirl it, and toss it out. This keeps your coffee hotter for longer.
-
Add Coffee: Put your coarse grounds into the bottom.
-
The "Bloom": Pour in just enough water (94) to wet the grounds. Watch them bubble and grow—this is the coffee "waking up." Wait 30 seconds.
-
The Big Pour: Pour in the rest of your water. Give it one gentle stir with a spoon to make sure all the grounds are submerged.
-
Wait: Put the lid on (don't plunge yet!) and set a timer for 4 minutes. This is the "magic window" for flavour.
-
The Plunge: Press the plunger down slowly. If you feel a lot of resistance, stop for a second and then continue. Pour it all out immediately so it doesn't keep cooking and get bitter.
